 WHERE THE SPIRIT

A wordless graphic novel inspired by the origins and lives of Martin’s two children, while serving as an homage to orphaned street children around the world. In this symbolic visual narrative, a scarecrow finds itself outcast in a foreign environment, useless and unneeded. When a spirit-wind invades the scene, it invites the Scarecrow to come explore a new reality.

Where the Spirit tells a universal story: Everywhere, always, there are children who are exiled and abandoned, thrown away, dropped in the cracks, lost, forgotten. Today, like the scarecrow, as many as 150 million children are living on the streets. Like the Scarecrow, they remain largely unseen and ignored.

The prayer infused in Where the Spirit is that more and more of us would be moved by a spirit of love and seek out these children, lift them, pry them, love them out of despair, and show them that where the spirit of love is, there is freedom and goodness and life.

 HEAD DEAD WEST

Head Dead West is a suite of symbols meant to simultaneously honor and haunt the roots of American culture as we know it. HDW parodies our longstanding Apocalyptic tradition while also shamelessly tapping it. It evokes our love of the wild while decrying our destruction of the environment. Most of all, the HDW symbols serve as modern totems to our undying spiritual instincts, and to the unavoidable doom set before us all to choose the images and stories through which we will come to know each other and our world.

HOLY WILD

My piece for the Earth: Fragile Planet Exhibit at the Society of Illustrators in NYC. 100 illustrators addressing the current environmental issues that we face in contemporary society.

Artist Statement: The Raven has a mythic reputation in ancient and modern culture. I’m most fascinated by it’s connection to wilderness and solitude. This image seeks to catch the energy, beauty, and spiritual qualities of the wild spaces, and wild creatures we share our planet with. The Raven then becomes a symbolic reminder to not only protect and care for the natural world, but also a reminder to become more connected to it in our day-to-day lives.

EXILE POSTER PROJECT 2011

My poster for the 2011 Exile Poster Project which focused on raising awareness against the sexual exploitation of children.

Sexual exploitation breaks the bodies of children in the here and now. And that is terrible enough. But it also rips apart their futures. Their ability to connect with people emotionally is often fractured. Their ability to connect with a loved one during adulthood in healthy sexual relationship is often numbed. We all need eyes to see that the violence that happens to our children today is also happening to them -- and to us -- tomorrow.
